Information
The poet Patrice Contamine de Latour was the same age as Erik Satie and became his closest friend and soulmate. In their youth in the 1880s they spent days and nights in Montmartre creating works together and planning practical jokes.
Satie’s Trois mélodies, from 1886, are songs based on poems by de Latour, and you can clearly hear how the lyrics and music go hand in hand. The poems are vibrant and dreamlike, and the music is at its essence humble and naive, plus – as usual with Satie – possesses a certain degree of irony.
I have always admired the simplicity of these songs and hope that this has been preserved in my choral arrangements. – Sonny Jansson
