Jacques (Jacob) Arcadelt (ca. 1507–1568), though of Flemish heritage, worked in Venice, Rome and, later, in Paris. Many different versions of this French folk tune / nursery rhyme exist, most recently an interpretation by Georges Brassens. The lyrics have been supplemented with material from contemporary sources.
